課程概述

Practicum in English is one of the foundational courses for those who are interested in English language teaching. It builds on Teaching Methods and Materials in English, and is a prerequisite course for your six-month internship, which together will help you prepare for your future language teaching career.

The syllabus presented here is only a tentative schedule for the spring semester. As an overview, we will engage in three modes of learning: 1) teaching, 2) observing, and 3) reflecting. See more details below.

1) Teaching
** Micro course at Heping Senior High School (five Friday sessions, including 3/29, 4/19, 5/3, 5/24, 6/7): With your partner, you will teach 1-2 session(s) of this course. Each session is two hours, between 13:00-15:00.
** English Enhancement Program, in collaboration with the Center for Bilingual Education at NTU (ten Thursday sessions, including 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23): tbc.
2) Observing
** We will have approximately six school visits this semester to observe how secondary school teachers teach. The exact dates for our school visits will only be confirmed in late February as this is the period when most teachers get their new timetables. You are expected to attend all visits; if you won’t be able to attend some of the visits due to conflict in scheduling, please inform the instructor as early as possible and arrange make-up visits by yourself.
** You are also asked to observe the classes immediately prior to the classes you are teaching for the micro course and the English Enhancement Program.
3) Reflecting
** We will have at least four in-person meetings in our regular classroom during the semester (confirmed meetings include W1: Introduction; W15: written final; W16: oral final). There are three important areas that we will also cover in the spring semester: classroom management, assessment, and technology-enhanced teaching.

A lot of what we’re doing in the spring semester will occur outside of NTU. Throughout the semester we will continue discussing important debates in the field, and reflect on the current landscape of English language teaching in Taiwan.

課程目標
By the end of this course, you will:
** Become more aware of the everyday realities of teaching.
** Enhance your skills in lesson planning and teaching.
** Continue engaging in dialogues that deal with the tensions between theory and practice.

課程要求
Be professional. In the spring semester, you will go through a major identity transformation: from being a student to being an early career teacher. This transformation can be quite overwhelming, but see it as an invaluable opportunity to develop your professional identity as a teacher.

Being professional in the school context means being on time, wearing proper clothing (e.g., no sandals; avoid jeans; shirt with collar always best), taking your work seriously (e.g., plan, practice, reflect, and revise), engaging in teaching conversations (e.g., ask questions and share what you know), and seeking continuous growth (e.g., find inspirations from observing, reading, attending workshops).

For all school visits, please also:
** Bring a notebook to take notes with a pen (refrain from using electronic devices when visiting schools, especially during observation and post-observation discussion)
** Prepare questions to ask the teachers during post-observation discussion

說明
1.
Attendance and participation
20%
Attendance is mandatory. If you will not be able to attend a class, please e-mail the instructor at least two days in advance and make sure your leave is officially recorded in the NTU system.
2.
Teaching portfolio
40%
This includes your lesson plan, actual teaching, and reflection report. You and your partner will submit one lesson plan (2-3 pages, not including appendices) and one reflection report (1 page) for each two-hour session taught. The instructor will go to at least two of your teaching sessions to grade your actual teaching. Please see handout in W1 for the deadlines of the lesson plans and reflection reports. All documents should be uploaded to the designated folder.
3.
Observation analysis
10%
You are asked to choose one area to systematically focus on in every observation (it would be a good idea to have another area in mind, just in case the area you’ve chosen does not “appear” in the observed classes). The areas could be teacher-student and student-student interactions; design and implementation of pedagogical activities; the use of technology in teaching; classroom management; teaching speaking, listening, reading, or writing; teaching grammar and vocabulary; or assessment. During the observations, you may take notes of whatever you find most meaningful, but please pay special attention to the specific area that you’ve chosen. For the observation report, you are asked to write, in English, a three-page analysis that includes the following: 1) why you’ve selected the particular area to zoom into; 2) how this area was manifested in at least five of the observed classes; and 3) which teachers you think handled that area exceptionally well and why. The due date of the observation report is 5/23 (W14).
4.
Written final 模擬教甄筆試
20%
The two-hour written exam will focus on lesson planning and designing a syllabus for a course. You will be expected to incorporate various elements of what you’ve learned in this semester and the previous one into your planning and designing. The written exam will be on 5/30 (W15).
5.
Oral final 模擬教甄口試
10%
Each person will go through a 10-12 minute interview. The interview will simulate what you’ll experience in the teacher qualification exams. The oral exam takes place on 6/6 (W16).
